1901 – For Rent: 12 Rooms, With or Without Stable, $600 a Year

The earliest printed description of the house at its new address is a rental ad. From the Boston Sunday Globe’s real-estate columns, October 20, 1901:

NEWTON CENTRE HOUSE, with or without stable, 12 rooms, bath, furnace, range, hardwood polished floors, 12,000 sq ft land, shade trees, only 4 minutes from Newton Centre RR station; rent only $600 year; open daily; take train or electric car to the house, 11 Chesley road; man on premises, or telephone 13-2 Camb.

Twelve rooms, a bath, a furnace, polished hardwood floors — and a stable, offered optionally, six years after the house was moved to its lot.

The ad also settles a question about the Dudley years: nobody in the family was living here. Ezra C. Dudley’s residence was on Parker Street — where he died just ten weeks after this ad ran — and the house he had created at 11 Chesley Road was let to tenants, with a “man on premises” to show it. It would take Asa C. Jewett’s purchase in 1902 to give the house a resident owner again.
