1925 Asa Jewett Dies

Asa Jewett, who lived at 11 Chesley from August 1902 until his death in 1925, died July 22, 1925 in Glacier National Park in Montana. Asa was a Newton Rotary Club member.

The Globe’s account of the funeral (July 29) fills in the rest: services were held that afternoon at the Newtonville Methodist Episcopal Church — “of a simple nature,” following the church ritual rather than the Masonic, since the Grand Commandery officers were still in Seattle — with burial in Newton Cemetery. Delegations attended from Gethsemane Commandery (where Jewett had been recorder for more than 30 years), Dalhousie Lodge, Aleppo Temple, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery, the Newton Rotary Club, and the Newton Chamber of Commerce. The article notes that “Grand Commander Jewett leaves a wife” — Asa had remarried after Minnie’s death in 1917; it was this second wife, Elizabeth Jewett, who conveyed the house in 1927. (The funeral article gives his date of death as July 23; the obituary two days after his death says July 22.)
